Michelle Lowbeer

Michelle Lowbeer graduated MSC in 1988, continuing her high school education at Sydney Girls High School. Michelle is a successful children’s author and creator of superhero Hairy Thought-Buster. We caught up with Michelle to find out exactly where a Mount Sinai student ends up!

WHAT ARE YOUR FONDEST MEMORIES OF MSC?
Fondest memories of MSC are sewing siddur covers, playing handball at recess and lunch, playing recorder and being read and told stories by our teachers.

HOW DID MSC NURTURE YOUR JEWISH IDENTITY AND BELIEFS?
Helped me to learn the Jewish rituals, celebrations and what it is to be part of a community. I am still in touch with some of my primary school classmates today, 30 years on! Also, my ability to read, write and speak Hebrew has stood the test of time.

WHAT IS YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH THE JEWISH COMMUNITY AND DID MSC NURTURE THAT INVOLVEMENT?
We were part of the progressive Jewish community in Singapore when we lived for 4 years, and now are part of North Shore Temple Emanuel where my kids go to Sunday School. Yes, I believe that Mount Sinai College fostered in me the idea of community and the sense of belonging. It was like having an extended family.

MICHELLE’S CURRENT BUSINESS
Hairy Thought-Buster is a Superhero for young minds, who busts children's negative thoughts with his magic popper before they become negative beliefs.

I’m about to launch Hairy Thought-Buster’s first children's book - called "I Am Important" - about a girl called Katie who thinks she's not important because her parents are always busy on their electronic devices. She thinks she's not important, that is, until Hairy Thought-Buster comes along to bust her negative thought (before it becomes a negative belief) and tells her the truth of herthat she really is important!
